What Is a Study Permit?

A study permit is an IRCC document authorizing foreign nationals to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada for programs longer than 6 months. You must be accepted to a DLI before applying. Confirm your institution at the IRCC DLI list.

Study Permit Requirements

  • Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a Canadian DLI
  • Proof of financial support: tuition + $10,000/year living expenses + $4,000/spouse + $3,000/dependent child
  • Valid passport | Biometrics ($85 CAD) | Medical exam (some countries)
  • Statement of Purpose: why you want to study in Canada and your post-graduation plans

Student Direct Stream (SDS) — Faster Processing

For students from select countries (China, India, Vietnam, Philippines, Morocco, Pakistan, and others): complete IELTS Academic (6.0 overall, no band under 6.0), Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of $10,000 CAD, pay first year of tuition upfront, clear medical exam. SDS processing: ~20 days vs. several months for the regular stream.

Working While Studying

  • Off-campus: Up to 24 hours per week during school terms; full-time during breaks
  • Spouse may qualify for open work permit if you're in a full-time Masters or PhD program

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

  • Programs 8+ months but less than 2 years: PGWP = same duration as program
  • Programs 2+ years: PGWP = 3 years
  • Apply within 180 days of receiving final marks
  • PGWP = work for any employer anywhere in Canada

Study to PR Pathway

  1. Graduate from a Canadian DLI
  2. Obtain your PGWP
  3. Work in Canada 1-3 years to qualify for Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
  4. Apply for PR through Express Entry CEC or a provincial PNP International Graduate stream
