An open work permit allows you to work for any employer in Canada without needing a specific job offer. Unlike employer-specific permits, open work permits give you the flexibility to choose your employer, change jobs, and work anywhere in Canada.

Types of Open Work Permits

1. Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

For graduates of eligible Canadian post-secondary institutions. Valid up to 3 years. See our study permit guide for details.

2. Spousal/Partner Open Work Permit

Available if your spouse/partner is: a Canadian citizen/PR who applied for inland spousal sponsorship; a foreign national studying at Canadian post-secondary at Masters/PhD level; a foreign national with a valid work permit in NOC TEER 0-2 occupations.

3. Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP)

If your current work permit is about to expire (within 4 months) and you have an active PR application through Express Entry, a provincial nomination, or certain other programs.

4. Refugee Claimant Open Work Permit

For people who have made a refugee claim in Canada while awaiting their hearing.

5. Caregiver Program Open Work Permit

For caregivers who have applied for PR under the Home Child Care Provider or Home Support Worker pilots.

How to Apply

  1. Log in to your IRCC My Account at ircc.canada.ca
  2. Start a new application, select 'Work Permit', then 'Open Work Permit'
  3. Upload required documents (varies by permit type)
  4. Pay $155 CAD application fee + $85 biometrics if not previously enrolled
  5. Submit and await IRCC decision

Processing Times

  • PGWP: 60-90 days | Spousal OWP: 90-120 days | Bridging OWP: ~90 days
  • Apply early — 'implied status' lets you continue working on same conditions while waiting

Tips

  • Keep your permit valid — renew 4+ months before expiry
  • You can change employers without notifying IRCC
  • Keep all employment records (T4 slips, ROEs, reference letters) for future PR applications
