Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions skilled workers ask most.

What is Express Entry and how does it work?
Express Entry is Canada's primary immigration system for skilled workers. It manages applications for three programs: Federal Skilled Worker, Federal Skilled Trades, and Canadian Experience Class. You create a profile, receive a CRS score, and may receive an ITA when IRCC holds draws from the pool.
How do I get my foreign credentials recognized in Canada?
The process varies by profession. For regulated professions (engineers, nurses, teachers, doctors), you must apply to the relevant provincial regulatory body. For unregulated professions, a credential evaluation from WES, IQAS, or ICAS is typically accepted by employers and IRCC. Start this process before applying — it can take 3-6 months.
What NOC code should I use for my occupation?
The National Occupational Classification (NOC) is Canada's system for categorizing jobs. Find your NOC by searching the IRCC website with your job title or duties. Since 2022, Canada uses NOC 2021 which uses a TEER system. TEER 0, 1, 2, and 3 are eligible for Express Entry.
How long does it take to get PR through Express Entry?
IRCC's target processing time for Express Entry applications is 6 months from submission. However, the time to receive an ITA depends on your CRS score — this can range from weeks to years depending on your profile and the category of draw.
Can I work in Canada while waiting for my PR application?
If you're in Canada on a valid work permit, you can typically continue working. IRCC also offers Bridging Open Work Permits (BOWP) for some applicants whose work permits are expiring while their PR is in process.
