Public Transit in Canadian Cities: A Newcomer's Complete Guide
By WelcomeAide Team
Public Transit in Canada: City by City
Unlike many European countries, Canada's public transit quality varies significantly by city. Toronto and Vancouver have the best systems; most smaller cities are more car-dependent. Here's what you need to know for each major city.
Toronto: TTC + GO Transit + UP Express
Toronto has the busiest transit system in Canada, with subway, streetcars, and buses operated by the TTC. Key info:
- Fare: $3.30 per trip (Presto card) or $3.35 cash; transfers are free within 2 hours
- Presto card: Get one at any subway station — it works on TTC, GO Transit, and most Ontario transit systems
- Subway lines: Line 1 (Yonge-University), Line 2 (Bloor-Danforth), Line 3 (Ontario), Line 4 (Sheppard)
- GO Transit: Regional rail and buses connecting GTA suburbs to downtown
- PRESTO monthly pass: ~$156/month for unlimited TTC rides
Vancouver: TransLink (SkyTrain + Bus + SeaBus)
Vancouver's TransLink is considered Canada's best transit system. The SkyTrain (rapid transit) is fast, frequent, and connects most of Metro Vancouver.
- Compass card: Reloadable transit card — get at any SkyTrain station
- Fare: $2.45–$5.65 depending on zones (2-zone system)
- SkyTrain lines: Expo, Millennium, Canada Line (to airport)
- Monthly pass: ~$112/month (2-zone) — big savings vs. paying per trip
- Bike Share: Mobi bikes available across Vancouver; integrates with transit
Calgary: CTrain + MAX BRT
Calgary has a free downtown core CTrain zone and an expanding BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) network.
- CTrain: Free in the downtown core (7 Ave); $3.60/trip outside
- Monthly pass: ~$112/month
- Lime e-scooters: Very popular for short trips in Calgary
Ottawa: OC Transpo + O-Train (LRT)
- O-Train Confederation Line connects east and west Ottawa through downtown
- Fare: $3.80 single; ~$116/month unlimited pass
- Presto card works on OC Transpo
Montreal: STM (Metro + Bus)
- One of Canada's best transit systems — frequent, reliable Metro with 4 lines
- Fare: $3.75 single; ~$97/month unlimited (lowest in Canada)
- OPUS card for all STM services
