How to Renew Your Canadian Permanent Resident Card in 2026
By
Your Canadian Permanent Resident (PR) card is your proof of PR status — you need it to travel internationally and return to Canada. PR cards are valid for 5 years and must be renewed before they expire.
When to Renew
- Apply for renewal at least 6 months before your card expires
- Your PR status does not expire even if your card does — the card is just proof of that status
- You CANNOT board a commercial flight to Canada without a valid PR card (or a PRTD from a Canadian embassy if outside Canada)
Residency Obligation
To renew your PR card, you must have met the residency obligation: 730 days (2 years) physically present in Canada within the last 5 years. Days spent outside Canada working for a Canadian company or accompanying a Canadian citizen spouse may count.
How to Renew
- Confirm you are physically present in Canada (applications from outside Canada are not accepted)
- Gather required documents: current PR card, passport(s), Canadian travel history proof, two passport photos
- Complete the application online through IRCC's portal (My Account)
- Pay the application fee: $50 CAD
- Submit and await processing (~2-4 months)
If Your PR Card Expired Outside Canada
Apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) at the nearest Canadian embassy or consulate. A PRTD is a single-use travel document allowing you to board a flight to Canada. Once you arrive in Canada, apply for a new PR card immediately.
Urgent Processing
If you have an urgent situation (medical emergency, funeral, work travel), request urgent processing with supporting documentation. Processed faster than standard applications.
Official: IRCC PR Card Renewal.
