Canadian Loyalty Rewards Programs Explained: A Complete Guide for Newcomers

By WelcomeAide Team

Collection of Canadian loyalty reward cards including PC Optimum Scene+ and Air Miles

Canadians love their loyalty programs — and for good reason. The right combination of rewards cards can save you hundreds of dollars a year on groceries, gas, entertainment, and everyday purchases. As a newcomer, signing up for these programs is one of the easiest ways to stretch your budget. All of the programs listed in this guide are free to join, and most can be set up in minutes using just your name and email address. No Canadian credit history, SIN, or immigration documents are required.

This guide covers the most popular and valuable loyalty programs in Canada, explains how each one works, and recommends which ones are worth your time.

PC Optimum

PC Optimum is Canada's largest loyalty program with over 18 million active members. It is the rewards program for Loblaw Companies, which owns more grocery stores than any other company in Canada.

Where You Earn Points

  • Grocery stores: Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore, No Frills, Zehrs, Your Independent Grocer, Valu-Mart, Atlantic Superstore, Maxi, Provigo, and Fortinos
  • Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix: Pharmacy, beauty, and everyday essentials
  • Esso and Mobil gas stations: Fuel and convenience store purchases
  • Joe Fresh: Clothing
  • Online: PC Express orders and through the PC Optimum app

How Points Work

  • You earn a base rate of 15 points per dollar spent at most Loblaw stores
  • At Shoppers Drug Mart, the base rate is 15 points per dollar, with regular bonus events like "20x the points" that can earn you 300 points per dollar
  • 10,000 points = $10 in free groceries or products
  • You can redeem points in increments of 10,000 (minimum $10 redemption)

Newcomer Strategy

Download the PC Optimum app and check it weekly. The app offers personalized bonus point offers (e.g., "earn 2,000 bonus points when you buy chicken breasts this week"). Loading and using these offers consistently can easily earn you $150 to $300 in free groceries per year. Shoppers Drug Mart's periodic "20x the points" events are exceptionally valuable — time your larger purchases (cosmetics, household essentials) for these events.

Scene+

Scene+ is a versatile loyalty program linked to Scotiabank and the Sobeys/Empire group. It recently expanded significantly, making it one of Canada's most broadly useful programs.

Where You Earn Points

  • Grocery stores: Sobeys, Safeway, FreshCo, IGA, Foodland, Farm Boy, Longo's, and Thrifty Foods
  • Cineplex theatres: Movies, concessions, and the Rec Room
  • Scotiabank: Earn Scene+ points on debit and credit card transactions if you bank with Scotiabank
  • Expedia for Scene+: Travel bookings
  • Various retail and restaurant partners

How Points Work

  • Base rate varies by partner — typically 1 point per dollar at grocery stores
  • 1,000 points = $10 for groceries or general merchandise; different rates for movies and other redemptions
  • Points can be redeemed for groceries, movies, travel, and merchandise

Newcomer Strategy

If you shop at Sobeys, Safeway, or FreshCo, Scene+ is automatic. If you also open a Scotiabank account (Scotiabank has strong newcomer banking packages), you earn Scene+ points on everyday debit and credit purchases, accelerating your earnings significantly.

Air Miles

Air Miles has been a Canadian staple for over 30 years. Despite the name, most people use Air Miles for non-travel rewards.

Where You Earn Miles

  • Grocery: Sobeys and affiliated banners (yes, you can stack Air Miles with Scene+ at some Sobeys locations by linking both cards)
  • Gas: Shell stations
  • Pharmacy: Rexall, Jean Coutu
  • Alcohol: LCBO (Ontario), certain provincial liquor stores
  • Retail: Staples, American Eagle, and other partners
  • Banking: BMO offers Air Miles credit and debit cards

How Miles Work

  • You earn 1 Air Mile for approximately every $20 spent at most partners (varies by retailer)
  • Miles can be redeemed for Cash Miles (95 miles = $10 off at participating stores) or Dream Miles (for flights, hotels, and experiences)
  • Cash Miles are the more practical option for most newcomers

Canadian Tire Triangle Rewards

Where You Earn

  • Canadian Tire — Hardware, automotive, sports, outdoor, and household products
  • Sport Chek — Athletic clothing and equipment
  • Mark's — Work wear and casual clothing
  • Atmosphere — Outdoor gear
  • Gas+ — Canadian Tire gas bars
  • Party City

How It Works

  • Earn 0.4% back in CT Money on most purchases (4 cents per $10 spent)
  • Earn up to 4% at Canadian Tire Gas+ locations
  • The Triangle Mastercard (no annual fee, available to newcomers) earns higher rates: 4% at Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Mark's, and Atmosphere; 2% at grocery stores; 1% elsewhere
  • CT Money can be spent at any Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Mark's, or Atmosphere store

Newcomer tip: Canadian Tire is one of the most useful stores for newcomers — you can buy winter gear, household essentials, small appliances, tools, and even some groceries. Getting the Triangle card (even without the credit card) is worthwhile.

Other Programs Worth Joining

IKEA Family

Free membership with exclusive discounts, workshops, and a free coffee or tea on every store visit. As a newcomer furnishing your home, IKEA Family discounts can save meaningful money.

Costco Membership

Not technically a loyalty program (it is a paid membership at $65/year for Gold Star, $130/year for Executive), but the savings on bulk groceries, gas, and household items often exceed the membership fee within a few months. The Executive membership earns 2% back annually (capped at $1,250).

Starbucks Rewards

Earn 2 Stars per dollar. At 150 Stars, redeem a free handcrafted drink. At 200 Stars, get free food or merchandise. If you are a regular coffee buyer, the savings add up.

RBC Avion / TD Rewards / CIBC Aventura

Bank-specific credit card rewards programs. Once you qualify for a Canadian credit card, these programs earn points on all your spending that can be redeemed for travel, gift cards, or merchandise. Check with your bank about newcomer credit card options — most Big Five banks offer newcomer credit cards with no Canadian credit history required.

Aeroplan (Air Canada)

Canada's largest travel loyalty program, earning points on Air Canada flights and through partners like TD Bank and CIBC credit cards. Even if you do not fly frequently, Aeroplan points can be earned through everyday credit card spending and redeemed for flights, hotel stays, car rentals, and merchandise. The Aeroplan program is free to join and worth having in your wallet for future travel needs as you settle into your Canadian life.

How to Maximize Your Savings

  1. Sign up for PC Optimum and Scene+ immediately — These two programs cover the majority of Canadian grocery stores. Together, they can save you $300 to $500 per year on groceries alone.
  2. Stack programs where possible — At some stores, you can earn both loyalty points and credit card rewards on the same purchase. For example, use a rewards credit card to pay at a PC Optimum-linked store to earn both PC points and credit card rewards.
  3. Use the apps — Most programs have apps with personalized offers, bonus point events, and digital coupons. Checking the app before you shop takes 30 seconds and can save you dollars on every trip.
  4. Time your big purchases — Shoppers Drug Mart's bonus points events, Canadian Tire's promotional multipliers, and Sobeys' bonus offers are worth waiting for when making larger purchases.
  5. Check the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada guide for tips on understanding loyalty programs and protecting your personal information.
