How to Become a Canadian Citizen: Requirements, Timeline, and Test Prep

By

A complete guide to Canadian citizenship in 2026 — eligibility requirements, the application process, the citizenship test, and language requirements.

Becoming a Canadian citizen is the final step in your immigration journey — and one of the most meaningful milestones you can achieve. Canadian citizenship grants you the right to vote, carry a Canadian passport, and be officially recognized as a member of one of the world's most welcoming nations.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Permanent Resident status: You must be a PR in good standing
  • Physical presence: At least 1,095 days (3 years) physically present in Canada within the last 5 years
  • Age 18-54: Must meet language and knowledge requirements
  • Language: Adequate knowledge of English or French (CLB 4 or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of Canada: Pass the citizenship test
  • Tax obligations: Must have filed taxes for at least 3 of the 5 years counted for physical presence

Calculating Physical Presence

Days outside Canada do NOT count toward the 1,095-day requirement. Days spent in Canada as a temporary resident (student, worker, visitor) before becoming a PR count as half a day, up to a maximum of 365 days (i.e., up to 1 year of pre-PR days can count).

The Application Process

  1. Check eligibility using IRCC's self-assessment tool
  2. Gather required documents: proof of PR status, passports, travel history, language evidence
  3. Complete the application online through IRCC's portal
  4. Pay $630 CAD (adults), $100 (minors under 18)
  5. Provide biometrics if required
  6. Attend citizenship test appointment (if age 18-54)
  7. Attend citizenship ceremony and take the Oath of Citizenship
