How to Renew Your Canadian Permanent Resident Card

How to Renew Your Canadian Permanent Resident Card

Why Your PR Card Matters

Your Permanent Resident (PR) card is proof of your status as a Canadian permanent resident. You need it to board commercial transportation (flights, cruise ships) to return to Canada from abroad. Without a valid PR card, airlines may not let you board even if you're a PR in good standing.

PR cards are typically valid for 5 years (some are issued for 1 year).

When to Renew

Apply at least 6 months before your PR card expires — and never wait until it's expired if you plan to travel internationally. Processing times currently run 3–12 months.

If your PR card expires while you're still in Canada and you have no travel plans, you don't strictly need to renew immediately — your PR status doesn't expire, only the card does. But renew before any international travel.

Maintaining Your Residency Obligation

Before renewing, make sure you meet the residency obligation:

  • You must have been physically present in Canada for at least 730 days in the last 5 years
  • Days working abroad for a Canadian company can count
  • Days accompanying a Canadian citizen spouse abroad can count

If you haven't met the 730-day requirement, speak with a immigration lawyer before applying — you may face PR status complications.

Important: Applying for PR card renewal triggers a residency obligation review. If you haven't met the 730 days, your PR status may be at risk. Get legal advice before applying if you're unsure.

How to Apply for Renewal

  1. Log in to your IRCC secure account (MyCIC)
  2. Apply online (most applicants) or by mail (with paper forms)
  3. Pay the fee ($50 CAD)
  4. You'll need: your expired or expiring PR card, 2 passport-style photos, proof of residency (tax returns, utility bills showing your Canadian address), and travel history documentation
  5. Provide your PR number and confirm biometrics if required

Emergency Travel Certificate

If your PR card is expired and you're outside Canada (or about to travel), you can apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) at the nearest Canadian embassy or consulate. This is a one-time travel document allowing you to return to Canada. It's processed urgently but requires demonstrating you still meet residency obligations.
