Canada Express Entry 2026: How to Get a Permanent Residency Invitation
By WelcomeAide Team
What Is Express Entry?
Express Entry is Canada's points-based immigration system for skilled workers. It manages three federal immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and Canadian Experience Class (CEC). Most successful applicants receive permanent residency within 6 months of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
How Express Entry Works
- Create an Express Entry profile at IRCC's online portal
- Receive a CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) score based on your profile
- Enter the pool — you're ranked against all other candidates
- IRCC holds draws regularly, inviting the top-scoring candidates
- Receive an ITA (Invitation to Apply) for permanent residency
- Submit your full application within 60 days
- Receive PR — typically within 6 months
Understanding Your CRS Score
Your CRS score is calculated from:
- Core factors (max 500 pts): Age, education, language scores, Canadian work experience
- Spouse factors (max 40 pts): Spouse's education, language, Canadian work experience
- Skill transferability (max 100 pts): Combinations of education + language or experience
- Additional points (max 600 pts): Provincial nomination (+600), Canadian degree (+15-30), sibling in Canada (+15), French ability (+25-50), arranged employment (+50-200)
The maximum CRS score is 1,200 points. Provincial nominations are the biggest single boost (+600).
Language Tests: IELTS vs. CELPIP
Most applicants take IELTS General Training. CLB 9 in all four bands (L/R/W/S) gives maximum language points. CELPIP is a computer-based alternative accepted by IRCC — some applicants find it easier and it gives results faster.
How to Improve Your CRS Score
- Improve language scores: Going from CLB 8 to CLB 9 is worth 31+ points per skill
- Get a provincial nomination: +600 guaranteed ITA (see: PNP guide)
- Gain Canadian work experience: CEC candidates get extra points
- Complete a Canadian degree/diploma: Worth 15–30 bonus points
- Study French: Bilingual candidates receive 25–50 additional points
After Receiving an ITA
You have 60 days to submit a complete application. Required documents include:
- Police certificates from every country you've lived in 6+ months since age 18
- Medical exam by a designated physician
- Education documents and language test results
- Employment records proving your work experience
- Proof of funds (if no Canadian job offer)
