Best Phone Plans for Newcomers in Canada: 2026 Buyer's Guide

Canadian Phone Prices: The Reality

Canada has some of the highest mobile phone prices in the developed world. A comparable plan costs 2–3× more than in the UK, France, or Australia. But in 2024–2025, real competition from new entrants (Freedom, Koodo, Public Mobile, Fizz) has brought prices down significantly, especially for newcomers willing to shop around.

Before You Buy: Get a SIM Immediately

As soon as you land in Canada, you'll need a local number. Your home country SIM will work on roaming but at prohibitive rates. Head to any convenience store or electronics store to pick up a prepaid SIM on arrival.

Good prepaid options for arrival week:

  • Public Mobile 3GB prepaid: ~$15–$20, covers your first week
  • Lucky Mobile: Available at Dollarama for cheap
  • 7-Eleven SpeakOut: No contract, immediate activation

Best Budget Phone Plans in Canada (2026)

Under $25/month

  • Public Mobile: $24/mo for 15GB — excellent value, autopay discount, Telus network
  • Lucky Mobile: $20–$25 options with decent data
  • Fizz (Quebec + some provinces): Customizable plans starting ~$20

$25–$40/month (Best Overall Value)

  • Koodo: $35–$40 for 15–20GB, tab system for phones, Telus network coverage
  • Virgin Plus: $35 for 15GB, Bell network, good customer service
  • Freedom Mobile: $35–$40, growing 5G network, good for urban areas
Shopping tip: Check r/Canada phone plans wiki and WhistleOut Canada for the latest deals — carriers frequently run promotions targeting newcomers.

Big 3 vs. Budget Carriers

Canada's Big 3 (Rogers, Bell, Telus) have the best coverage, especially in rural areas and for US roaming. But their sub-brands offer the same networks at lower prices:

  • Telus → Koodo, Public Mobile
  • Bell → Virgin Plus, Lucky Mobile
  • Rogers → Fido, Chatr

For most newcomers in cities, Koodo or Public Mobile on the Telus network is the sweet spot of value and coverage.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) vs. Getting a Phone

Bring your unlocked phone from home if you can — all major Canadian carriers work with an unlocked GSM phone (check band compatibility). Getting a new phone on a tab/contract in Canada ties you to a carrier for 2 years and often ends up costing more overall.

International Calling

Most plans include calling within Canada and to US. For calls to your home country:

  • WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram: Free over WiFi
  • Skype: Very cheap international calling rates
  • Add-on international packs from your carrier for regular calls to specific countries
